Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire — A critical validation workshop for four thematic group reports on the blue economy kicked off today in Grand-Bassam, spearheaded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The two-day session aims to align these reports with the nation’s sustainable development priorities and uncover partnership opportunities to propel the sector forward.
Dedi Séraphin, Programme Officer for the FAO in Côte d’Ivoire, emphasized the UN agency’s commitment to supporting the Ivorian government in crafting policies and strategies that bolster food security, promote sustainable natural resource management, and advance the blue economy. Through a dedicated project, the FAO is focusing on sustainable utilization of aquatic, fisheries, and coastal resources to drive long-term economic and social benefits.
“These thematic group reports are not just documents; they are strategic tools designed to guide public policy and investments in the blue economy,” Séraphin noted. He urged participants to leverage the workshop to identify tangible public-private partnerships, critically assess the reports, and develop actionable, time-bound recommendations with clear accountability measures.
The FAO’s pledge to accompany Côte d’Ivoire extends beyond the workshop, with a commitment to assisting in the implementation of recommendations through technical expertise and fostering dialogue among public, private, and technical partners. The goal is to transform these recommendations into prioritized actions, supported by realistic timelines and sustainable financing mechanisms, thereby positioning the blue economy as a cornerstone for food security, job creation, and resilience.
Dr Kaba Ibrahima, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to implementing the workshop’s outcomes. The goal is to foster a sustainable blue economy that enhances food sovereignty, youth employment, and economic growth. He also expressed deep appreciation for the FAO’s consistent technical and methodological support, highlighting the organization’s pivotal role in advancing the nation’s key priorities.
Bringing together leading figures in the blue economy—including experts, researchers, sectoral ministry representatives, private sector stakeholders, technical and financial partners, and civil society—the workshop will conclude tomorrow. Its outcomes are expected to lay the groundwork for a resilient and prosperous blue economy in Côte d’Ivoire.
