Cameroon’s cocoa exports boosted by new quality control training
Cameroon’s commitment to enhancing its cocoa export quality was underscored by a recent training program for 35 specialized verifiers, a collaborative effort between the National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC) and UNIDO.
ONCC and UNIDO Collaborate to Enhance Export Quality
The National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC), in a joint effort with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), recently concluded a vital training session in Douala on June 26, 2026. This program equipped 35 export warehouse verifiers with enhanced skills, directly impacting the Cameroonian cocoa quality for global markets.
Over three intensive days, from June 24 to June 26, participants delved into advanced techniques for sampling, stringent quality control measures, and efficient management of cocoa warehouses designated for export. Didime Olivier Tchoumi, UNIDO’s Senior Technical Advisor, emphasized that this strategic initiative is designed to significantly boost the competitiveness of both Cameroonian cocoa and coffee on the international stage. This crucial activity forms an integral part of the PICS-Cameroun project, generously supported by funding from Japan.
This development follows a significant international triumph for Cameroonian cocoa, which clinched a coveted gold medal on Tuesday, February 20, 2026. The award was presented at the 10th edition of the prestigious Cacao of Excellence Awards, held concurrently with the renowned Chocoa Trade Fair. This major annual gathering for the cocoa and chocolate industry saw close to 191 samples from 45 different origins meticulously evaluated for their quality, sustainability, and unique sensory profiles.
Out of the numerous submissions, an exclusive panel of international sensory and industrial experts distinguished only 50 lots. Cameroon’s representative, sample n°167, proudly secured the top position in the highly competitive Africa & Indian Ocean category.
For Cameroon, this latest victory resonates strongly, building upon a bronze recognition achieved in 2023. It clearly underscores an upward trajectory and signifies a marked improvement in the qualitative competitiveness of its beans within the discerning “fine and flavour” premium market segments. In these specialized markets, factors such as taste, authenticity, and sustainability are paramount in determining prices, which are often considerably higher than those commanded by traditional commodity cocoa.
Beyond the immediate acclaim of the medal, this distinction serves to solidify Cameroon’s reputation as a prime terroir capable of producing exceptional cocoas. This aligns perfectly with the escalating demand from high-end chocolatiers and specialized international markets. Furthermore, this recognition is anticipated to stimulate increased investments in vital areas such as traceability, advanced technical training, and the structured development of cooperatives. These elements are indispensable for translating this qualitative excellence into sustainable and tangible economic benefits for local producers across the nation.
