Strengthening defence ties through strategic cooperation

In a significant move to bolster Cameroon’s military capabilities, Defence Minister Joseph Beti Assomo concluded an unprecedented defence and financial cooperation agreement with Turkish authorities in Ankara. The pact, signed in the presence of Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler and Vice-Minister Musa Heybet, represents a major milestone in Cameroon-Turkey relations.

This landmark agreement establishes enhanced financial and military collaboration mechanisms, while deepening bilateral cooperation in shared strategic domains. Beyond the signing ceremony, Minister Beti Assomo also conducted an official visit to the Milli Savunma Üniversitesi (MSÜ), Turkey’s premier defence university, where discussions centred on three critical pillars: expanding bilateral military cooperation, advancing officer training for Cameroon’s armed forces, and strengthening the overall strategic partnership between the two nations.

The agreement builds on an already robust defence partnership. For years, Turkey has been training Cameroonian military personnel at MSÜ facilities. During a May 2025 visit to Yaoundé, Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler publicly acknowledged Ankara’s commitment to providing free training for Cameroonian cadets and non-commissioned officers in Turkish military academies.

This newly signed agreement marks a significant upgrade in defence cooperation, elevating the partnership to unprecedented financial and operational levels. By diversifying and strengthening its strategic alliances, Cameroon is positioning itself as a key player in regional security. Following partnerships with France, the United States, and Israel, Turkey now emerges as a critical military partner for Yaoundé, offering a comprehensive approach centred on training, financing, and operational collaboration.
