The government of Cameroon has launched the Pandemic Fund, an international initiative designed to bolster epidemic prevention and control. With a substantial investment of $23.5 million, the program will enhance laboratory capacities, epidemiological surveillance, and healthcare workforce training across the country, with priority given to 42 health districts.
Transforming health security with targeted investments
Launched under the guidance of Public Health Minister Manaouda Malachie, the initiative adopts the ‘One Health’ framework—a holistic approach integrating human health, animal health, and environmental conservation. This strategy addresses the root causes of disease emergence by fostering collaboration across sectors.
National rollout and key priorities
The program will be implemented across all ten regions of Cameroon, with a sharp focus on 42 high-priority health districts. Key interventions include:
- Strengthening early warning systems for rapid outbreak detection
- Upgrading laboratory infrastructure to improve diagnostic accuracy
- Training healthcare professionals in epidemic response protocols
- Establishing robust emergency response mechanisms
- Ensuring resource mobilization for timely interventions
Speaking at the launch event, the Public Health Minister emphasized that a nation equipped with advanced laboratories, skilled personnel, and a prepared administration can effectively contain outbreaks before they escalate into full-blown crises.
Global collaboration behind the initiative
The initiative is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and UNICEF. Launched in 2022 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pandemic Fund currently operates in 128 countries, including Cameroon. Its mission is to finance projects that enhance national capacities in epidemic prevention, preparedness, and emergency response.
