Burkina Faso: l’arrestation d’un imam suscite de vives réactions chez certains fidèles

The capital city of Ouagadougou experienced significant unrest following the apprehension of Imam Mohamed Kindo on Tuesday afternoon. His detention, occurring on the eve of the Tabaski celebration, quickly prompted hundreds of his followers to gather in protest, leading to confrontations with security forces in the city center. These clashes involved the deployment of tear gas and forceful dispersal tactics.

This incident is closely tied to a contentious government initiative: a proposed law designed to regulate religious practices across Burkina Faso. The legislation aims to prohibit the exercise of faith within public institutions, including government administrative offices, hospitals, and military barracks.

The draft bill, which received approval from the Council of Ministers on March 19, has ignited widespread controversy, particularly among Sunni Muslims. Imam Kindo, an influential leader within this community, had been an outspoken critic of the proposed text, a stance that appears to have precipitated his arrest.

This recent event echoes previous instances of tension. In mid-April, Imam Mahmoud Barro of Bobo Dioulasso was similarly taken into custody. Additionally, concerns were raised following the death of Mahamadi Baguian, a cyber-activist supportive of the current administration, who passed away after being arrested by Ouagadougou police on March 31. These recurring incidents highlight ongoing sensitivities surrounding freedom of worship and expression in Burkina Faso.
