In response to pressing coastal management challenges across the Bénin coastline and Gulf of Guinea, the country has taken a decisive step forward. As part of the OPERA project (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa), an international training initiative focused on ocean forecasting fundamentals has successfully engaged nearly 1,200 participants worldwide. This milestone not only highlights the critical role of Bénin’s universities and researchers but also elevates the nation’s standing in maritime science and sustainable coastal development.
Academic Excellence Drives Global Maritime Research
The initiative, spearheaded locally by the UNESCO Chair at the Université d’Abomey-Calavi (UAC), delivered a seven-week online program (MOOC) that showcased the country’s academic leadership. Among the 1,162 enrollees spanning 111 countries, Bénin emerged as the most represented nation, reflecting the strong commitment of its educators, students, and environmental managers in advancing oceanic knowledge.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a researcher and lecturer at UAC, emphasized the program’s practical focus: « What makes this course exceptional is its immediate real-world application. We designed every module to ensure learners can directly apply their newfound expertise to pressing local challenges—whether they work in fisheries, coastal management, or marine science. »*
Cutting-Edge Tools for Coastal and Fisheries Protection
Over 21 hours of interactive training, participants explored advanced technologies such as satellite observation, Argo floats, and high-resolution numerical models. The goal was clear: equip national stakeholders with actionable skills to address critical issues, including:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Enhancing wave and tide modeling to safeguard the Bénin shoreline from degradation.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and forecasting high-yield fishing zones to support local economies.
- Maritime safety: Strengthening surveillance of Bénin’s territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.
A select group of 500 learners received personalized mentorship, culminating in an academic certification jointly awarded by the UNESCO Chair at UAC and the University of Toulouse.
EU-Funded Partnership Strengthens Regional Expertise
The program’s success stems from a robust collaboration between Université d’Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International, with financial backing from the European Union under the Arc X / Global Gateway initiative.
By positioning young scientists and UAC volunteers at the heart of this international network—bringing together researchers from Bénin, France, the United States, and Spain—the country is reinforcing its commitment to ocean science as a catalyst for sustainable growth and maritime sovereignty.
