Cotonou witnessed a landmark moment on Friday, July 17 as Benin and the World Bank Group officially launched a groundbreaking 10-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for 2026-2036. This ambitious initiative aims to catalyze inclusive and sustainable economic transformation across the West African nation.

The launch ceremony drew high-level participation, including Benin’s government officials, foreign diplomats accredited to the country, and key development partners. Together, they gathered to celebrate the start of a decade-long collaboration designed to align with Benin’s national development priorities.

The CPF 2026-2036 is structured around three core pillars. The first focuses on strengthening human capital through improved nutrition, healthcare access, and skills training. The second aims to expand critical infrastructure, ensuring better connectivity and essential services. The third seeks to accelerate private sector-led economic growth, unlocking new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs. The framework also embeds national resilience goals, reinforcing social cohesion and stability across Benin.

World Bank’s endorsement of Benin’s vision

Anna Bjerde, World Bank Group Managing Director of Operations, praised the vision set forth by Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, and his administration. Bjerde highlighted that the CPF launch comes at a pivotal time for the country, coinciding with a renewed political momentum and the strategic Alafia Benin 2060 initiative.

She emphasized that this partnership will translate Benin’s ambitions into tangible outcomes, particularly benefiting young people and local entrepreneurs. Investments in human capital and productive infrastructure, she noted, are vital for fostering sustainable, job-creating growth in Benin.

Bjerde reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s commitment to supporting Benin’s efforts to enhance national competitiveness and improve living standards for all citizens.

Aristide Medenou, Benin’s Minister of Economy, Finance, and Cooperation, underscored that the new CPF aligns seamlessly with the country’s top priorities—boosting agriculture, fostering private sector growth, and creating youth employment opportunities.
