Iconic referee Deniz Aytekin sheds tears at final whistle
Nostalgia filled the air as Deniz Aytekin officiated his final match this past Saturday in Munich, where Bayern Munich triumphed over 1. FC Köln with a 5-1 scoreline. The German referee etched his name into football history in 2017 during Barcelona’s miraculous Champions League comeback at Camp Nou, where he played a pivotal role. After blowing the whistle on 254 Bundesliga fixtures and overseeing more than 650 matches across all competitions, Aytekin concluded an 18-year top-flight career. At the final whistle, players including Harry Kane rushed to pay their respects.
Aytekin, 47, visibly moved, wiped away tears on the pitch. «After so many years in the Bundesliga, after being part of this football family, leaving it isn’t easy. I am deeply grateful, especially with everyone who matters most to me present here today,» he shared. «The Bundesliga is extraordinary, and to have been part of this league for so long, experiencing so many emotions up close… these moments will remain unforgettable.» Bayern Munich took to social media to honor him: «Dear Deniz Aytekin, congratulations on your refereeing career! After today’s match, we wish you all the best for what’s next!»
Fans now await Paris Saint-Germain’s tribute to the departing official.
