In a thrilling finale to Ligue 1, AS Monaco surrendered a 4-1 lead to suffer a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg at the Meinau Stadium. The loss capped off a season that concluded with the club finishing in seventh place.
With Lille’s defeat fresh in mind, Sébastien Pocognoli opted for a tactical shift, reverting to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria partnered Lamine Camara in midfield, while Ansu Fati played behind Folarin Balogun, and Simon Adingra returned to the left flank. The Alsace faithful, numbering just 2,500, witnessed a high-pressing start from Monaco, with early turnovers in Strasbourg’s own half setting the tone.
Monaco’s dominance materialized early. Ten minutes in, Lamine Camara intercepted a misplaced pass from El Mourabet, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. After Martial Godo pulled one back for Strasbourg (1-1 in the 34th minute), Camara restored Monaco’s lead with a precise strike under the bar. Ansu Fati then extended the advantage just before halftime. The floodgates opened shortly after the break when Folarin Balogun’s shot deflected off Ismaël Doukouré into his own net, making it 4-1.

What followed was a stunning collapse. Diego Moreira halved the deficit, Sébastian Nanasi equalized in the 72nd minute, and Godo then struck a delicate chip over the keeper to give Strasbourg the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Paris Brunner nearly rescued Monaco in stoppage time, hitting the crossbar in the 87th minute, but it was too late. Four goals conceded in half an hour sealed a heartbreaking finale.
Pocognoli: « We lacked consistency »
« We started strongly and controlled the first half effectively. At 4-1, some may have thought the game was over, but unfortunately, we conceded immediately after, reigniting the contest », Pocognoli reflected in his post-match press conference. He highlighted recurring defensive frailties, stating: « This isn’t the first time this season we’ve collapsed defensively during weaker phases. Our mental resilience often falters when pressure mounts. » He concluded: « We missed key ingredients to finish what we started. Simply put, consistency was our downfall. »

A season of highs and lows
AS Monaco ended the 2025-2026 campaign in seventh, without securing European football for next season—a stark contrast to their previous two Champions League appearances. Pocognoli acknowledged the shortcomings directly: « My role is to analyze what went wrong. There’s clearly a need for introspection. When I arrived, I sought to instill identity, cohesion, and clear principles, which remain unchanged. It’s vital to retain the positives and use them as a foundation for next season. » With the summer transfer window looming, the club faces a critical period to reshape its sporting project.
