The United Nations office has confirmed a tragic toll, revealing that over 300 individuals have been killed by ADF rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri and Nord-Kivu provinces since the beginning of the year. The UN strongly condemned a brutal assault carried out overnight on May 30-31 in Ngadi, a village situated near Beni in Nord-Kivu.
Following this specific incident, the Congolese government reported that 15 civilians and one soldier lost their lives.
Furthermore, the ADF group has intensified its campaign of terror in the Beni region, resulting in over 40 civilian fatalities within a mere three-day span.
Operating in eastern DRC since the mid-1990s, the ADF rebels are responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians over decades. In 2019, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization, which subsequently recognized them as its “Central Africa Province” and has claimed responsibility for several of their violent acts.
