As of June 29, 2026, work on the access roads to the bridge over the Nyong River at Malombo, in the Nyong-et-Kellé department, is nearing completion. After finishing the road surface, the Chinese company CFHEC has started installing signage and drainage systems. These access roads, totalling 960 metres on both riverbanks, consist of a single carriageway with two 3.5-metre lanes and 1.5-metre shoulders on each side.

The pavement structure comprises a 25-centimetre layer of lateritic gravel foundation, a 20-centimetre crushed stone base (0/31.5), and a 5-centimetre bituminous concrete surface course. The bridge itself—a 160-metre-long steel-concrete composite twin-girder structure—is also in the finishing phase. Officials from the Ministry of Public Works are confident the entire project will be delivered approximately eight months ahead of the contractual deadline.

The project has not been without challenges. The contractor faced disputes over the construction of the base camp, difficulties in acclimatising staff, fuel theft from trucks, occasional hostility from local residents, theft at the site, delayed payments, heavy downpours, and rising river levels. Despite these obstacles, CFHEC has stuck to its commitment made at the start of construction: to hand over the crossing ahead of schedule, as instructed by the project owner.

The supervision of the works is carried out by the joint venture INTEGC/GENERAL ENGINEERING. With the road access almost ready and the bridge awaiting only the final finishing touches, residents of the area can soon look forward to a safer and more reliable crossing over the Nyong River.
