young activists in Kinshasa set conditions for constitutional reform in DRC
On Wednesday, June 3, a youth-led organization in Kinshasa convened a press conference to address the ongoing debate surrounding constitutional reform in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The group, known as the Nouvelle Génération Congolaise, outlined three key conditions that must be met before any constitutional changes can be considered: a clearly demonstrated necessity, broad national consensus, and a peaceful political climate.
During the event, Mukenge Totoro, spokesperson for the Nouvelle Génération Congolaise, emphasized the importance of asking critical questions before proceeding with constitutional reform. « Why change the constitution now? What specific problems does this reform aim to solve? How will it improve the lives of Congolese citizens? Who will be the primary beneficiaries of this reform—the nation or certain political actors? And how can we ensure that this reform strengthens democracy rather than serving private interests? » he stated. « Until these questions receive clear, transparent, and convincing answers, the debate will continue to fuel mistrust and division. »
The youth organization also highlighted its priorities, which include safeguarding the Republic, promoting stability, and prioritizing the Congolese people. They called on the youth to reject being used as mere electoral reserves or mobilization tools for political interests that do not align with theirs. Instead, they urged young people to become a force for reflection, constructive proposals, civic oversight, and national transformation.
Regarding the recent « ville morte » (city shutdown) protests called by the opposition to reject the constitutional reform project, the Nouvelle Génération Congolaise acknowledged the right to demonstrate as a constitutional guarantee. However, they stressed the need for all parties to engage in dialogue, exchange ideas, and pursue constructive reforms rather than deepening divisions.
key demands of the youth organization
- Clearly demonstrated necessity: The reform must address urgent and specific national challenges.
- Broad national consensus: The reform should enjoy widespread support across political and social spectrums.
- Peaceful political climate: The process must avoid escalating tensions or undermining national stability.
a call for youth empowerment
The Nouvelle Génération Congolaise urged the youth to take an active role in shaping the nation’s future. « Young people must not be reduced to a reserve of votes or a tool for political mobilization, » the spokesperson emphasized. « Instead, they should be at the forefront of proposing solutions, holding leaders accountable, and driving transformative change. »
The organization’s stance reflects a growing movement among Congolese youth to assert their agency in the country’s political and social landscape, demanding transparency, accountability, and a vision for sustainable development.
