U.S. tightens visa issuance for Gabonese applicants starting 2026

The Trump administration has announced a sweeping change to its visa issuance policy, slashing the number of African nations authorized to process American entry permits beginning June 2026. This restriction will directly impact Gabonese citizens and residents, who will no longer be able to apply for U.S. visas from their home country.

Under the revised framework, only about 50 African nations—down from roughly 50—will retain the privilege of issuing U.S. visas. This move is framed as a measure to curb illegal immigration flows into the United States. Gabonese travelers will need to travel to neighboring countries such as Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or Togo to submit their visa applications.

Gabonese applicants should prepare for significant additional expenses, including international airfare and extended stays abroad while awaiting visa processing. The logistical challenges and financial burden of traveling to distant embassies will likely deter some prospective travelers.
