US weighs military response to JNIM in Mali amid security crisis
The Trump administration is exploring the possibility of a US military intervention targeting the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-linked coalition active in Mali. While discussions remain in preliminary stages, high-level officials within the White House have raised the prospect of direct strikes against the group.
Within government circles, opinions on this strategy are divided. Sebastian Gorka, senior counterterrorism advisor at the National Security Council, has emerged as a key advocate for military action, arguing that targeted operations could weaken the jihadist network’s operational capacity.
A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, neither confirmed nor denied reports of imminent strikes. However, the official emphasized the United States’ commitment to bolstering regional security partners by facilitating access to advanced American defense equipment and training programs. This push aims to empower neighboring countries to take a more proactive role in combating extremist threats.
The official went on to describe the Sahel’s terrorism landscape as a globalized threat, urging both regional allies and NATO members to reinforce the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in its fight against the JNIM and the Islamic State’s local affiliate. The deteriorating security situation in Mali was explicitly linked to failed counterterrorism partnerships with Russia, which the official described as ineffective in curbing militant activities. This assessment serves as a cautionary tale for other African nations considering similar collaborations.
The Pentagon declined to comment on the deliberations, while the State Department reiterated its unwavering condemnation of terrorist activities in Mali, stressing that such groups pose a direct threat to international stability.
The JNIM, Mali’s most prominent jihadist alliance, has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the US since 2018, reflecting its role as a central node in regional extremist networks.
