US affirms Morocco’s Western Sahara sovereignty in landmark message to King Mohammed VI
The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, received a message from US President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day celebrations on July 30. In the correspondence, Trump reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed Rabat’s autonomy proposal as the sole viable path to resolving the decades-long territorial dispute.
«The United States stands firm: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a just and lasting solution,» Trump stated in the message.
The White House leader emphasized that «any alternative approach only perpetuates the status quo,» calling it «unacceptable.» «This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward that goal,» he declared.
In a congratulatory note to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump highlighted the «250-year history of American friendship with Morocco,» describing a bond «built on trust and mutual respect.» He praised the monarch’s «wise leadership,» hailing him as «a pillar of stability» and underscoring Morocco’s «consistent commitment to peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both American and Moroccan citizens.» Trump also noted Morocco’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, framing the partnership as «invaluable» for the US. «To that end, we will also collaborate to ensure stability across the Sahel region,» he added.
On the economic front, Trump directed his administration to «advance economic and social development with Morocco, including in the Western Sahara territory.» He spotlighted key sectors for collaboration, including technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense.
«Together, we will forge a new era,» Trump concluded, urging a relationship prioritizing the interests of both nations.
