UNESCO Mali joins forces to kick off 27th Bamako environment week

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Mali played a pivotal role in the official launch of the 27th edition of the Quinzaine de l’Environnement in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The delegation, led by UNESCO Representative Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane, underscored the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the region.

The high-profile ceremony was presided over by Mali’s Minister of State for the Economy and Finance, Mr. Alousséni Sanou, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister and Head of Government. The event brought together a diverse array of participants, including government officials, ministers responsible for environmental matters from the Accord States (Burkina Faso and Niger), national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society representatives, the private sector, and media professionals.

The 27th edition of the Quinzaine de l’Environnement is designed to unite national initiatives aimed at heightening community awareness about the preservation of natural resources and fostering environmentally sustainable practices. Scheduled to run from June 5 to 15, 2026, the program centers around two core themes:

  • « Climate crisis solutions for a safer, more resilient, and sustainable future », aligning with World Environment Day;
  • « Pastures: recognize, respect, restore », in observance of the International Day for Combating Desertification and Drought.

By participating in this initiative, UNESCO reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the Malian government to enhance environmental awareness, promote best practices, and support concrete actions for sustainable and resilient development in Mali.

The UNESCO delegation’s presence at the event highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to integrate environmental education and sustainable practices into national policies and community-led initiatives across West Africa.
