DRC national dialogue: UN urges consensus for lasting peace
UN urges inclusive dialogue and fundamental freedoms in DRC
- Politique
Speaking from the United Nations Security Council, James Swan, the head of MONUSCO, delivered a powerful political message to Kinshasa this Friday. He strongly urged all Congolese stakeholders to reach an agreement on the framework for an inclusive national dialogue. Swan underscored the critical importance of safeguarding civic space and fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of expression and assembly, to ensure that every participant can voice their perspectives within a peaceful and secure environment.
This call resonates deeply given the profound divisions within the country over the constitutional debate, further highlighted by the recent targeting of the CENCO headquarters by pro-power supporters in Kinshasa.
Addressing security concerns, the UN diplomat lauded the establishment of a national commission tasked with overseeing security sector reform. He also acknowledged the ongoing efforts by the presidency to finalize the nation’s inaugural national security policy, a significant step forward for the country.
