The French Professional Football League (LFP) has officially closed the case of the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse Football Club (TFC) on May 27. The decision, though expected, brought a nuanced outcome: the 0-0 score recorded at the 22nd minute stands, rather than a 3-0 forfeit win for FC Nantes. This ruling spared the Violets from further penalties while reshaping the Ligue 1 standings.

TFC secures ninth place with a historic performance

Toulouse Football Club now occupies the ninth spot in Ligue 1, their highest ranking since RedBird Capital’s investment in the club. With 45 points—tied with FC Lorient—the Violets edge ahead thanks to a superior goal difference (3 against Lorient’s -1). Though a 3-0 forfeit would not have altered their position relative to Strasbourg (8th with 53 points), this outcome confirms Toulouse’s upward trajectory in French football.

The LFP’s decision followed a thorough review of the match’s abandonment. The match officials concluded that the 0-0 score at the time of interruption best reflected the game’s state, avoiding harsher penalties for FC Nantes.

Sanctions focus on FC Nantes, not Toulouse

The match abandonment stemmed from serious pitch invasions by FC Nantes supporters, who protested against the club’s relegation. Dozens of masked ultras stormed the field, hurling pyrotechnics in the 34th and final matchday of the season. The LFP responded with targeted sanctions: a closed-door match at the Beaujoire stadium and a two-match closure of the Loire stand, from which the disruptions originated.

FC Nantes will begin their Ligue 2 campaign without fan support in this section, but they avoided more severe penalties like point deductions. Toulouse Football Club, meanwhile, continues its steady progress, unaffected by the ruling’s outcome.
