Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet steps down from Mali football team

Following a tenure of nearly two years, Belgian football coach Tom Saintfiet has announced his immediate departure from the position of head coach of the Mali national football team. His resignation comes at a critical time, as the country faces escalating political tensions and increasing security challenges.

The Belgian manager, who took charge in August 2024, revealed his decision in a heartfelt message shared on social media on April 27, 2026. « Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of the Mali national team. I leave with pride and dedication, despite the challenging circumstances we faced. It is time for me to pursue a new opportunity », he stated.

Tom Saintfiet’s tenure: a solid performance under pressure

During his nearly two-year stint, Saintfiet guided the Mali national football team through a challenging period, navigating both sporting and off-field difficulties. In his 17 matches in charge, the team suffered only two defeats, including a narrow loss to Senegal in the quarter-finals of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations.

The coach expressed his deep solidarity with the people of Mali in his farewell message, emphasizing the unifying power of football. « In these particularly difficult times, my thoughts are with the Malian people and the entire nation. Football is a sport of unity, and I hope it continues to bring hope and peace to Mali », he added.

Federation reacts, seeks new coach

The Malian Football Federation (FMF), represented by its president Mahazou Baba Cissé, has acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and expressed gratitude for his efforts. The federation has since opened a call for applications to find a suitable replacement for the vacant position.

Before his appointment at Mali, Saintfiet was linked to the Ghana national team role but ultimately lost out to Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who now leads the Black Stars.

Mali now faces the dual challenge of finding a new head coach while continuing its footballing ambitions amid ongoing instability.
