Western Africa’s medical and research landscape is poised for a historic leap forward. Sorbonne Université, a leading European academic and medical institution, has turned its attention to Benin. A high-level delegation from the French university, led by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to tour this new flagship of Bénin’s public health system.

This highly strategic visit outlines the shape of a promising alliance aimed at bridging the academic and hospital worlds to boost healthcare delivery and medical training across the sub-region.

A world-class medical facility

Inaugurated to redefine health standards and drastically cut medical evacuations abroad, CHIC impressed its visitors. Spanning over 40,000 square metres with more than 430 beds, the centre integrates cutting-edge imaging and treatment technologies, notably in medical oncology, radiotherapy and complex cardiology.

From the care units to the medico-technical hub, the European delegation observed the rigour of infrastructure built to the strictest international norms.

“The shared ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training and research for the benefit of Béninese and African populations.”

Towards tailored training and cutting-edge research

Beyond a courtesy tour, this meeting marks the start of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: jointly design specialised training programmes that directly meet CHIC’s advanced needs, while building on existing collaborations in Bénin.

By combining Sorbonne Université’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not just acquiring a modern hospital; it is permanently establishing a centre of reference and appeal for the medicine of tomorrow on the African continent.
