Sonelgaz launches 40 mw power plant project in N’Djamena

Sonelgaz team arrives in N'Djamena for 40 MW power plant project

A high-level delegation from Sonelgaz has arrived in N’Djamena to initiate preparations for constructing a new 40 megawatt (MW) power plant in Chad. The announcement follows directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to strengthen African cooperation and foster strategic South-South partnerships, particularly with Chad.

The visit, which took place after Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official trip to Algeria from April 22 to 24, underscores the growing energy collaboration between the two nations. Led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, the Algerian delegation met with key Chadian officials, including the Director-General of Tchad-Elec (Chad’s national electricity company), the Algerian Ambassador to Chad, and senior representatives from Chad’s Ministry of Energy.

The delegation also held high-level discussions with Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Chad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, and Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, Chad’s Minister of Water and Energy. These meetings highlighted the project’s strategic importance in deepening economic and energy ties between Algeria and Chad.

Technical assessments and project roadmap

The Algerian team engaged in detailed technical discussions with Tchad-Elec representatives to address critical aspects such as:

  • Project technical requirements and regulatory frameworks
  • Timeline for preparatory phases
  • Coordination mechanisms for joint teams
  • Establishment of a shared roadmap
  • Formation of bilateral working groups

These efforts aim to ensure seamless collaboration before commencing on-site technical inspections. The delegation will evaluate existing infrastructure, assess grid connectivity options, and verify compliance with technical and regulatory standards. These preliminary steps are essential to meet the project’s high-quality execution standards.

A commitment to sustainable energy partnership

The initiative reflects the shared determination of both countries to build a lasting energy partnership. It also demonstrates Sonelgaz’s dedication to supporting African partners through:

  • Knowledge transfer and capacity building
  • Provision of practical, tailored energy solutions
  • Alignment with Africa’s energy development needs

This project represents a significant milestone in Algeria-Chad relations, reinforcing mutual trust and opening new avenues for sustainable economic growth in the region.
