Sénégal’s Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô, unveiled a new 30-member government on Monday evening. This significant announcement revealed that the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite holding a majority in the National Assembly, would not be represented in the new cabinet.
This executive reshuffle unfolds amid a period of national political realignment, characterized by the inclusion of various technocratic and political figures within the new administration. Prior to the official list’s release, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had publicly stated that members of his political formation would not participate in the formation of this government.
Outlining the strategic direction for the newly appointed team, Prime Minister Lô emphasized that this constitutes a « mission government with an obligation of results ». He highlighted its dual foundation, drawing on both political and technocratic expertise, while also ensuring substantial representation for youth and women within its ranks.
He further elaborated that the government’s approach would be marked by a revised methodology, focusing on institutional coherence and leveraging the collective skills of both national talent and the Senegalese diaspora.
The new governmental structure sees the reconfirmation of several key ministers from the previous administration. Among those retaining their portfolios are Cheikh Diba for Economy, Cheikh Niane for Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye for Hydraulics and Sanitation, and Moustapha Guirassy for National Education.
Additionally, other prominent Senegalese officials maintaining their positions include Ibrahima Sy at Health, Moussa Bala Fofana for Urban Planning, Yankhoba Diémé overseeing the Armed Forces, Déthié Fall for Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr for Communication.
This comprehensive restructuring follows the decision by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô thus takes over from Ousmane Sonko, who has transitioned to the role of President of the Senegalese National Assembly.
