Senegal’s prime ministerial handover: Sonko’s cautionary advice to incoming leader

The handover ceremony at Senegal’s Prime Ministry became a platform for outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to share critical insights with his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. The transition underscored both continuity and collaboration as the two leaders navigated the handover of responsibilities.
The official transfer of power took place last Friday between outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and newly appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who now leads the government’s executive branch.
The event was characterized by mutual respect and reflections on their shared journey in steering national affairs. Addressing the audience, the incoming Prime Minister recounted the origins of their professional relationship. « In April 2024, he reached out to me. I was unknown to him at the time. Still, I answered the call and earned his trust, » he explained, highlighting their early collaboration on the National Transformation Agenda.
He also emphasized his subsequent integration into government operations: « I was entrusted with responsibilities within the executive branch. The President of the Republic called upon me to support the National Transformation Agenda, which we implemented under his guidance. The results speak for themselves. » Al Aminou Lô stressed the importance of his bridging role between the Prime Ministry and the Presidency. « During our final interaction, Sonko urged me to maintain strong ties between the two institutions regarding the National Transformation Agenda. I have since prioritized this coordination. »
He further revealed that Sonko maintained an open-door policy for consultations, ensuring seamless transitions. « Whenever I needed to update him or seek advice, he welcomed me with openness and generosity, » he noted. Reflecting on the transfer, Al Aminou Lô described it as both a personal and institutional milestone. « It is an honor to carry out this transition with someone who has consistently championed Senegal’s progress and supported me generously, » he stated, praising Sonko’s conduct during the handover.
The incoming leader also disclosed a candid conversation with Sonko, who had forewarned him about the challenges ahead. « He gave me a heads-up just last Tuesday, warning me that the road ahead would be extremely difficult, » Al Aminou Lô shared. Despite the obstacles, he expressed determination to uphold institutional cooperation and leverage Sonko’s experience. « I will continue to benefit from his wise counsel and seek his guidance whenever necessary. »
