Ousmane Sonko secured 132 out of 133 votes cast to become President of Senegal’s National Assembly this May 26, 2026, barely four days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye relieved him of his duties as Prime Minister.

As leader of the ruling Patriotic Africans of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, Sonko takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of Monitoring, Guidance, and Evaluation of the ‘National Senegal 2050 Transformation Program’ at the presidency, and later as Secretary-General of the Government of Senegal.
