Ousmane Diagne has been appointed head of the Constitutional Council in Senegal by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, according to a decree issued on July 13. The former justice minister succeeds the late Mamadou Badio Camara in the post.
The appointment comes after the High Court’s ruling on the constitutional reform adopted by the National Assembly. A victory for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had taken on the wise men.
However, Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef, the original driver of the constitutional revision, sees this decision as a setback.
The Constitutional Council is responsible for reviewing the constitutionality of laws, examining electoral disputes, and ensuring the regularity of elections.
