The recent visit of Ousmane Sonko to Touba has reignited political debates, drawing a sharp response from Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, Senegal’s Minister of Land and Air Transport. The minister strongly criticized the Pastef leader’s allegations linking Touba to illicit financial activities.

Minister condemns attacks on Touba’s reputation
In a public statement, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye condemned what he termed as an unfounded attack on the sanctity of Touba and its residents. « Linking this holy city to money laundering is a blatant disrespect to its people and the Mouride values they uphold », he declared.
The minister stressed that such remarks reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of Touba’s spiritual legacy. « To suggest that residents of Touba could be involved in financial misconduct is to ignore their lifelong commitment to the teachings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, » Ndiaye asserted. He emphasized the values of dignity, hard work, and integrity deeply embedded in the Mouride tradition, calling the allegations an « egregious misrepresentation ».
Ndiaye also pointed out the absence of key religious and local leaders during Sonko’s visit as a sign of collective disapproval toward his statements. Beyond the controversy, he highlighted the government’s unwavering support for Touba, praising President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s dedication to addressing the city’s needs.
Government commitment to Touba’s development
The minister underscored the administration’s proactive stance, noting that the president’s policies reflect a deep understanding of Touba’s significance. « President Faye recognizes the spiritual and social importance of this city and is actively working to meet its people’s aspirations », Ndiaye stated.
He also lauded Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo’s efforts in expediting long-overdue projects under the president’s guidance. Calling for national unity, Ndiaye urged political actors to prioritize Senegal’s collective progress over divisive rhetoric.
In closing, he reaffirmed his confidence in President Faye, describing him as « a man of integrity, wholly devoted to the nation’s advancement ». « Despite relentless attempts to undermine him, he remains steadfast in his mission to deliver on the Senegalese people’s expectations and steer the country toward prosperity, » Ndiaye concluded.
