The African Football Confederation (CAF) made a controversial call three weeks ago, stripping Senegal of the rights to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and awarding them to Morocco instead. This decision followed chaotic scenes in the closing moments of the final match on January 18 in Rabat. Senegal’s national team, the Teranga Lions, has vehemently opposed the ruling.

This week, the Senegalese Football Federation received the official notification and detailed reasoning behind the CAF’s decision. This step is crucial as it paves the way for Senegal to formally challenge the ruling through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), according to reports.

cas ruling expected promptly

The CAF President has already indicated confidence in the CAS process, though the tribunal has not disclosed a timeline. However, a verdict is anticipated within the coming weeks, and once delivered, it will be final—with no possibility of appeal for either Senegal or Morocco.

Me Matthieu Reeb, the CAS Secretary General, emphasized the tribunal’s readiness to handle the case efficiently. “The CAS is fully equipped to resolve this dispute with specialized and independent arbitrators,” he stated. “We understand the urgency for both teams and fans to receive a resolution. Our priority is to expedite the process while ensuring all parties receive a fair hearing.”
