Senegalese President Ousmane Sonko has threatened to bring down the government "as many times as necessary", according to a statement made at a meeting in Touba on Sunday.

Sonko, who is also the president of the Assemblée nationale, accused the government of trying to undermine certain gains in the management of oil, gas and phosphate resources, allegedly for the benefit of foreign interests. He announced that the majority party in parliament could deposit a motion of censure if the executive continues down this path.

Sonko also proposed a new law aimed at submitting future contracts for exploitation of strategic resources to the National Assembly.
