saint-Étienne and nice deliver barren clash in Ligue 1 vs Ligue 2 playoff

The first leg of the relegation playoff between the two sides ended goalless under a dull display

The encounter at Geoffroy-Guichard on Tuesday evening lacked intensity. Saint-Étienne and Nice played out a lifeless first-leg stalemate in the Ligue 1 vs Ligue 2 playoff (0-0). Across 51 minutes in the opening period and 52 in the second, neither side managed a single shot on target. The combined expected goals (xG) total of 0.41—0.11 for the home side and 0.30 for the visitors—marks the lowest figure for a full fixture in France’s top two divisions (including playoffs) over the past four seasons, according to Opta.

a season of meagre returns

This season, only two other matches have come close to such a barren performance: Grenoble-Bastia (0.55 xG, 0-0) and Toulouse-Strasbourg (0.56 xG, 1-0). Even the much-talked-about clash between Metz and Brest on 12 December 2023 (0-1) recorded a slightly higher xG of 0.54.

For Saint-Étienne, the absence of any shots on target was a rare occurrence. The club has managed this feat just twice in the last 20 seasons—most recently in December 2024 against Marseille (0-2) and previously in April 2017 against Paris Saint-Germain (0-5), both at home. Yet, what the match lacked in offensive spark, it made up for in defensive solidity. With 15 clean sheets this term, ASSE trails only Paris Saint-Germain’s 18 in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 combined.
