A true product of the club’s academy, Presnel Kimpembe experienced the various challenges of the QSI era with Paris Saint-Germain. His journey ultimately concluded on a high note with a Champions League victory. The Parisian academy graduate reveals that the acquisition of Willian Pacho quickly made him realize his time at the club was drawing to a close.

In 2024, Paris Saint-Germain made a significant move, investing €40 million to bring Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt. The intention was clear: the Ecuadorian international arrived in Paris to form a central defensive partnership with Marquinhos. This new signing inevitably impacted Presnel Kimpembe, who also operates as a left-sided central defender. The former Parisian, now playing in Qatar, recounted the moment Luis Enrique informed him that a new player would be recruited for his position.

Pacho’s arrival paved the way for Kimpembe’s exit

« Heartbreak? No. Not really, because I was already nearing the end of my tenure. I always pushed myself to succeed and achieve my objectives. The situation had become more complex, but that didn’t stop me from working hard, striving to return to my best level at the opportune moment. The story is quite incredible, culminating with this Champions League triumph. I would have preferred to depart as a true on-field contributor to that victory. But the best way to thank everyone was to leave with that trophy in hand, » he shared in a recent interview.

“The situation had become more complex”

The defender, who came through the PSG ranks, also spoke about the subtle sense of frustration he felt, even amidst the Champions League celebration. « There was immense joy and happiness. Yet, internally, a small part of me felt frustrated. I wished I could have been a primary actor on the pitch. While I know I played a significant role within the team and the club, not being on the field gives it a unique flavor, » Presnel Kimpembe elaborated.
