Political pressure mounts in Louga over local elections
Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling party Pastef Les Patriotes, used his visit to Louga over the weekend to directly challenge President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on the organization of upcoming local elections. The parliamentary majority leader was in the northern city as part of his party’s nationwide campaign to distribute membership cards when he addressed a large crowd of supporters and activists.
Equal treatment demanded for election decree
During his speech, Sonko drew a comparison between the presidential decrees used to appoint or dismiss officials and the one expected to set the date for local elections. « Issuing a decree to remove Fadilou Keïta or Waly Diouf Bodiang falls within presidential powers, and no one disputes that. The same process should apply to fixing the election date. These are all simply decrees, » he declared to thunderous applause.

In Louga, he suggested that the absence of a fixed election date might stem from the president’s apprehension about the current momentum of his party. According to Sonko, President Faye is particularly wary of « the enthusiasm and mobilization » of the « patriots » supporting his movement.
