Ousmane Sonko declares PASTEF will not join Mali’s next government
In a decisive statement released via his official social media channels, Ousmane Sonko, leader of PASTEF-Les Patriotes, has declared that the party will not participate in Mali’s upcoming government formation. The announcement follows extensive consultations between Sonko and the President of the Republic, which ultimately failed to resolve key disagreements.
«This morning, a lengthy meeting took place between the President of the Republic and myself,» Sonko explained. «While some areas of alignment were identified, significant disagreements remain—particularly concerning the role and positioning of the majority within the executive framework, the structure of which remains unclear.»
He added, «As a result, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not be part of the next government and will not be represented by any ministers.» The decision reflects the party’s commitment to its principles and its refusal to compromise on core issues.

In a statement issued by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX), PASTEF-Les Patriotes outlined the rationale behind its decision. The party emphasized its responsibility to adhere to commitments made during the installation of Ousmane Sonko as a Member of Parliament. Multiple exchanges with the President of the Republic were held to discuss the formation of the new government, culminating in a lengthy discussion this morning.
«While some convergences were confirmed,» the statement noted, «significant disagreements persisted, especially regarding the role of the majority within the executive structure, the details of which remain undefined.» After presenting further proposals to the President following internal consultations, no favorable response was received.
«Consequently, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any ministers,» the statement concluded. «We will provide further updates in due course and wish the new team every success.»
