As the specter of terrorism continues to cast a long shadow over the critical “three borders” zone, Niger is actively pursuing strategic military alliances to alleviate the immense pressure on its armed forces. Confronted by the aggressive actions of non-state armed groups, particularly Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), authorities in Niamey find themselves compelled to diversify their international support to sustain operational capabilities on the ground.
It is against this backdrop of intense security challenges that Algeria has delivered a substantial consignment of military equipment to the Nigerien armed forces. This emergency allocation includes four helicopters – two Mi-24V combat aircraft and two Mi-171 tactical transport helicopters – alongside essential munitions, spare parts, and comprehensive logistical and maintenance support gear.
The constraints of the terrain
From a tactical standpoint, Niger’s armed forces are engaged in a complex war of attrition. Recent confrontations and ambushes, attributed to JNIM in the western part of the country and to EIGS along its border regions, underscore a critical and immediate need for enhanced aerial mobility and close-range firepower. For Niamey, the acquisition of attack and heavy transport aircraft is an absolute priority to ensure vital fire support for ground troops and to facilitate rapid medical evacuations.
The persistent deterioration of the security climate thus prompted the Nigerien command to directly request assistance from its northern neighbor.
Algeria’s strategic alignment amid regional rebalancing
On the Algerian side, the provision of this material support, mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and executed by General Saïd Chanegriha, aligns with a clear objective: to safeguard the immediate stability of its southern borders. By responding to Niamey’s appeal, Algiers aims to contain the spread of terrorist contagion while simultaneously asserting its role as a pivotal security partner within the Sahelian sphere.
Nevertheless, this direct assistance and the accelerating pace of rearmament across the Sahel underscore a growing militarization of the region. As the pressure exerted by insurgent groups shows no signs of abating, the effectiveness of this Algerian aerial support will soon be critically assessed in the operational theaters across Niger.
