Niger soldiers killed in Boko Haram attack near N’Guigmi
A military outpost near N’Guigmi, in southeastern Niger, came under heavy fire on Friday as suspected Boko Haram militants launched a coordinated assault, leaving a reported ten soldiers dead. The assault unfolded in the early hours of the morning, sending shockwaves through the garrison town that has long been a flashpoint for extremist violence.
Bastion of extremism
N’Guigmi, a strategic garrison town in the Diffa region, sits on the southern edge of Lake Chad—a vast, marshy waterway bordered by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Since 2009, the area has evolved into a hotbed of jihadist activity, hosting not only Boko Haram fighters but also elements of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The town’s proximity to the lake and its porous borders have made it an ideal staging ground for cross-border raids and ambushes, putting immense pressure on local and regional security forces.
Casualties and aftermath
According to local witnesses who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, the attack began at dawn and lasted several hours. The militants employed heavy weaponry, targeting both military personnel and nearby civilian settlements. In the ensuing firefight, at least ten soldiers were killed, alongside four members of the national guard. The attackers also sustained casualties, though the exact numbers remain unverified.

The official Nigerien News Agency acknowledged the deadly incident without providing specific casualty figures, confirming only that multiple military personnel had died in a Boko Haram strike on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.
