The political climate in Mali has grown increasingly tense following the disappearance of Cheick Mamadou Tall, the eldest son of prominent opposition lawyer Mountaga Tall. The young man vanished on May 16, just weeks after his father was forcibly taken by unidentified assailants.
Mountaga Tall, a leading figure in the M5 protest movement that played a pivotal role in toppling former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in 2020, has since become a vocal critic of the current military junta. His legal team confirms the circumstances of his own abduction on May 2, describing it as a brazen daylight operation carried out by hooded men in Bamako.
New wave of concern after family member’s disappearance
In a statement released to legal representatives, Mountaga Tall’s lawyers expressed alarm over the sudden disappearance of Cheick Mamadou Tall. The incident reportedly followed a phone call received by the 24-year-old, leaving authorities and activists scrambling to determine his whereabouts.
The legal collective urgently called on Malian judicial and administrative authorities to intervene immediately, demanding the safe return of both individuals and a thorough investigation into their cases. The statement, signed by four attorneys, underscored the gravity of these unlawful detentions occurring within a climate of restricted civic freedoms.
Political tensions escalate amid security challenges
Mountaga Tall’s recent legal work has made him a prominent target. He has been defending several military personnel arrested on charges of attempting to destabilize state institutions, while simultaneously challenging the junta’s decision to dissolve political parties across Mali.
The backdrop of these events includes a series of deadly jihadist attacks on April 25, orchestrated by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) in collaboration with the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). These assaults targeted key military positions, further straining an already fragile security landscape in the Sahel nation.
