Moroccan authorities have implemented robust measures to prevent any illegal attempts to cross into the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. This follows the detection of recent online posts and anonymous messages circulating on social media, which called for a coordinated mass crossing scheduled for August 15. The announcement was made in Rabat by Rachid El Khalfi, spokesperson for Morocco’s Interior Ministry.

In his statement, Mr. El Khalfi confirmed that security forces have already detained several individuals suspected of inciting such actions. These suspects are undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office. The Interior Ministry warned that these calls pose serious risks to public safety and constitute legal offenses under Moroccan law. Both participants and organizers of these online campaigns will face legal consequences.

The Interior Ministry emphasized that the operational capacity of security services, coordinated by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), extends beyond a specific timeframe. It represents a permanent and continuous surveillance system, particularly in areas adjacent to the Ceuta and Melilla border crossings. This system is continuously reinforced and adapted based on evolving ground conditions and detected risks.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and avoid falling for misleading instructions that endanger human lives. They reiterated that combating irregular migration is conducted in strict adherence to the law.

Call for Spain to accelerate minor repatriation

The official statement stressed that tackling irregular migration and human trafficking networks requires a shared responsibility approach that cannot be shouldered by one party alone.

In this context, the Moroccan Interior Ministry called on Spanish authorities and Spain’s Interior Ministry to fulfill their commitments by accelerating the repatriation of unaccompanied minors currently in Ceuta to their families in Morocco. The department led by Mr. El Khalfi urged Madrid to overcome administrative and judicial obstacles delaying these returns, always prioritizing the best interests of the minors.

Rabat also reaffirmed the central role of the immediate repatriation mechanism, highlighting its proven effectiveness in previous border interventions. Authorities assured that Moroccan law enforcement will continue to act with firmness and responsibility to uphold public order and safety, maintaining high readiness levels and constant coordination in full compliance with legal provisions.
