Prominent Opposition Figure Mountaga Tall’s Son Vanishes After Father’s Abduction in Mali

News. Deepening concerns grip Mali as prominent opposition figure and lawyer Mountaga Tall, along with his eldest son Cheick Mamadou Tall, are reported missing. Their legal representatives have issued a statement, urgently calling for their release and condemning these “illegal” actions, which unfold against a backdrop of escalating Mali politics and significant tensions under the nation’s military government.

A second disappearance after Mountaga Tall’s abduction

The family’s legal team confirms that Cheick Mamadou Tall has been unaccounted for since May 16, following a mysterious phone call. This incident closely follows the abduction of his father, Mountaga Tall, who was reportedly taken by masked individuals on May 2 in Bamako. As of now, no official details regarding his whereabouts or the specific circumstances of his disappearance have been released, intensifying the need for clarity on this Mali security issue.

A vocal critic of the military government

Mountaga Tall, a former key figure in the M5 movement instrumental in the 2020 ousting of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, initially backed the military’s rise to power before transitioning into one of its most outspoken critics. Notably, the seasoned lawyer has been representing several military personnel facing charges of “attempted destabilization of institutions” and has also legally challenged the transitional authorities’ decision to dissolve political parties, highlighting his central role in current Mali politics.

An increasingly volatile political climate

These troubling disappearances unfold amidst a delicate security and political landscape across West Africa, particularly in Mali. In late April, strategic positions held by the military regime were targeted by attacks claimed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). In response to this escalating situation, the Tall family’s legal counsel implores both administrative and judicial authorities to exert every effort to locate the two men and fully illuminate the circumstances surrounding their vanishing.
