The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a significant shift in momentum, asserting full control over previously contested areas targeted by the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, operating in central and southern Mali.
In an official statement, the FAMA confirmed that intense clashes resumed on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location in the northeast, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The renewed fighting followed the arrival of additional manpower and military equipment dispatched to reinforce the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions.
The military communiqué highlighted the resilience of Malian troops, stating, “In response to these pressure tactics, our units engaged the enemy with unwavering determination and tactical discipline, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with courage and professionalism.”
Reaffirming their commitment to national sovereignty, the FAMA expressed absolute confidence in their ability to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, protect civilian populations, and decisively defeat hostile forces. The statement underscored the army’s readiness to uphold peace and stability across the country.
The Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted rumors of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, being killed, asserting that Ag Akli remains actively involved in directing military operations in northern Mali.
