Following years of deep-seated instability and a series of military takeovers in 2020 and 2021, Mali has once again been plunged into a violent armed conflict with potentially far-reaching consequences. On Saturday, April 25, a massive and coordinated offensive was launched by Tuareg insurgents from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) alongside jihadist fighters from the Al-Qaïda-linked Groupe de soutien à l’islam et aux musulmans (JNIM). The assault targeted seven key locations across the country, including the capital Bamako, its neighboring garrison town of Kati, as well as Mopti, Sévaré, Konna, Gao, and Kidal.

The strategic northern stronghold of Kidal has reportedly fallen entirely into the hands of the insurgents. The attackers employed sophisticated tactics, including kamikaze drones, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), vehicle-borne explosives, and direct assaults on military installations. According to various reports, the offensive began early Saturday morning, with the FLA and JNIM claiming responsibility for strikes against the presidential residence, the Ministry of Defence, and the Modibo Keita International Airport in Bamako.

Government response and the death of Sadio Camara

The transitional government described the strikes as “complex and coordinated,” confirming at least 16 injuries among security forces and civilians. A 72-hour curfew was implemented in Bamako, and the international airport remained closed through Sunday. General Oumar Diarra, Chief of General Staff, attributed the violence to a destabilization plot involving both domestic and foreign entities. While the military claims to have neutralized over 200 militants, General Diarra characterized the loss of Kidal as a strategic “redeployment” to Anefis to better protect the local population.

In a devastating blow to the junta, the Ministry of Defence confirmed the death of Colonel Sadio Camara. The influential minister was killed after a suicide bomber targeted his home in Kati. Reports indicate that Camara engaged in a firefight with the attackers before succumbing to his injuries at a hospital. The blast also claimed the lives of his family members and several civilians at a nearby mosque. As a central figure in Mali’s pivot toward Moscow and the deployment of Russian forces, Camara‘s death marks a significant political and military loss for President Assimi Goïta, who was himself evacuated to safety during the chaos.

Russian withdrawal and the role of Africa Corps

The Russian Africa Corps, which succeeded the Wagner Group in the region, announced it had vacated Kidal in coordination with Malian authorities. The paramilitary group claimed to have played a vital role in defending against the multi-city offensive, asserting that they neutralized roughly 1,000 jihadists and prevented a “Syrian-style” collapse of the state. Despite these claims, reports suggest the Russian forces suffered casualties and were forced to evacuate wounded personnel and heavy equipment under pressure from the insurgents.

A tactical alliance between Touaregs and jihadists

This massive escalation signals a formalization of the partnership between the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) and the JNIM. Although these groups hold divergent long-term goals—with the Touaregs seeking autonomy for the Azawad region and the jihadists aiming for an Islamic state—they have found common ground against the Bamako junta and its Russian allies. This collaboration intensified after the 2023 departure of UN peacekeepers (MINUSMA), which led to a resumption of hostilities in the north.

Analysts also point to potential external involvement. The Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR) has previously been linked to providing tactical information to Malian rebels, particularly during the battle of Tinzaouaten in 2024. The use of advanced drone technology and deceptive tactics suggests a level of sophistication that may stem from international expertise. While Kyiv officially denies direct support for groups labeled as terrorists, the Malian government has already severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine over these allegations.
