Mali faces severe humanitarian crisis under jihadist blockade

In a firm declaration to the diplomatic corps in Bamako, Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop dismissed calls from local political factions advocating for negotiations with armed jihadist groups. These groups currently control significant portions of northern Mali and have intensified their blockade on key routes, plunging communities into extreme hardship.

«We must be clear: the government will not engage in dialogue with lawless terrorist groups responsible for years of suffering endured by our people,» Diop stated emphatically during the address. His stance underscores the administration’s commitment to a military solution, despite escalating humanitarian tolls.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in military reinforcements, including new shipments of Russian-supplied equipment reportedly delivered to Malian forces. According to regional correspondent Serge Daniel, these assets are being strategically deployed to regain control over critical areas, particularly around Kidal—a stronghold of armed factions.

Humanitarian emergency deepens across Mali

The blockade’s impact has been devastating. In Diafarabé, a town in the Mopti region, residents have endured a year-long siege imposed by the Jnim jihadist faction, beginning on May 12, 2025. The situation has deteriorated into a full-blown famine, with supplies of food, medicine, and essential services nearly exhausted. Survivors describe a harrowing reality marked by desperation and isolation.

«No one can enter or leave. The siege is absolute. All our food reserves are gone—famine has taken hold,» shared a local resident via phone interview. «We pleaded with military detachments for help, and they promised aid via an upcoming convoy, but nothing has arrived. After protests by women and youth, we received assurances, yet hope remains elusive. Once, during the flood season, we managed to smuggle in supplies via river routes, despite grave risks. I was shot and broke my arm in one such attempt. Now, survival is the only priority. All we ask for is food.»

Strategic military operations underway

Malian forces, bolstered by foreign support, are intensifying efforts to break the blockade and reclaim lost territories. Recent movements indicate a push toward Aguelok, a key location near Kidal, where jihadist groups maintain a strong foothold. Meanwhile, authorities are racing to reopen critical highways blocked by militants, stranding hundreds of travelers and goods across the country.

The government’s refusal to negotiate with armed groups contrasts sharply with the mounting civilian suffering. As the crisis escalates, international observers warn of a potential collapse in regional stability, urging immediate humanitarian intervention to avert catastrophe.

  • Jihadist blockade paralyzing supply chains and access to essential services;
  • Local populations in Diafarabé and surrounding areas facing acute food shortages;
  • Government maintains hardline stance against negotiations with armed factions.
