On 26 June, Vice President Hermann Immongault represented President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema at the festivities in Antananarivo celebrating the 66th anniversary of Madagascar’s independence. Alongside other delegation leaders, Immongault attended the military parade at Mahamasina Stadium, which highlighted the commitment, patriotism, and modernisation of the armed forces. The commemoration carried the theme “reform for the development of Madagascar”.

The Vice President’s presence demonstrates the excellent relations between the Gabonese and Malagasy peoples. It also illustrates the shared desire of Libreville and Antananarivo to further strengthen their exchanges. This follows the visit of Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, head of Madagascar’s Refondation, to Libreville from 5 to 7 June. The highlight of that visit was a one-on-one meeting with his Gabonese counterpart at the Bord de Mer Palace. Afterwards, Randrianirina expressed his intention to draw lessons from Gabon’s transition and praised the achievements made during that period.

By sending the coordinator of government action to these celebrations, President Oligui Nguema reaffirms the strategic importance Gabon places on strengthening ties with the Great Island. The increase in high-level exchanges between the two countries thus heralds a new era of cooperation, promising in political, diplomatic, cultural and economic development spheres.
