A convoy of Russian paramilitaries from Africa Corps came under armed attack in central Mali on 28 September 2026, in an assault claimed by the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). The incident resulted in casualties and material losses within the Russian contingent.
Attack details and location
The ambush occurred late in the morning between the villages of Tiemaba and Wewo, north of Niono in the Ségou region. The targeted convoy was composed almost exclusively of Russian fighters, a configuration that differs from the usual patrols where Africa Corps units operate alongside Malian Armed Forces (FAMA).
Area of jihadist influence
The Niono sector has for years been a stronghold of Katiba Macina, a key component of JNIM, the al-Qaeda-affiliated alliance in the Sahel.
Casualty claims and responses
In a statement released shortly after the attack, JNIM claimed responsibility, saying it had killed or wounded at least seven members of the Russian contingent and seized a significant amount of military equipment before withdrawing. Local sources in the region reported at least four Russian fighters killed in the clashes.
Neither the Malian General Staff nor Africa Corps officials have published an official toll for this specific incident. However, the Malian army announced the following day that it had carried out several targeted airstrikes in nearby areas, including near Dioura, against identified terrorist positions.
