Since 2008, Action Against Hunger has been actively engaged in Burkina Faso, implementing vital humanitarian and development initiatives to support communities facing severe challenges. With a population of over 23.5 million and a human development index ranked 186th globally, the country grapples with persistent issues including political instability, escalating security threats, and recurring climate-related shocks.

Key figures and humanitarian needs in Burkina Faso

The situation in Burkina Faso has dramatically deteriorated in recent years. In 2024 alone, nearly 3,000 security incidents were recorded, displacing over 2.4 million people. Among these, 2.7 million individuals are currently experiencing acute food insecurity, while 611,500—including 480,000 children and 131,500 women—suffer from severe malnutrition. Additionally, 1.7 million people urgently require access to safe water and sanitation facilities.

Our integrated approach to crisis response

Action Against Hunger adopts a comprehensive strategy combining emergency interventions with long-term development programs to address the multifaceted crisis in Burkina Faso. Through the RRM-Frontline mechanism, we deliver rapid assistance in the most affected regions, providing:

  • Emergency food aid to combat hunger and malnutrition
  • Shelter kits and essential non-food items for displaced families
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) support to prevent disease outbreaks
  • Healthcare services through mobile clinics and support to local health centers
  • Economic recovery programs to restore livelihoods
  • Mental health and psychosocial support to address trauma and stress

Our operations span seven regions, in close collaboration with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA). This partnership enables us to scale up interventions and reach communities most in need.

Specialized projects addressing critical needs

To tackle specific challenges, we have launched targeted initiatives such as:

  • Project RESAN: Focuses on food security and nutrition by distributing food, providing nutritional supplements, and supporting income-generating activities for vulnerable households.
  • Project PAMUCE: Strengthens health and mental health services in health facilities and communities, ensuring comprehensive care for affected populations.
  • Project BEOOLGO: Aims to decentralize health services in western Burkina Faso through training and support to local health structures.
  • Project PREPARE (USAID initiative): Enhances reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional health services, particularly in underserved areas.
  • Project YERETALI (Burkina Faso/Côte d’Ivoire): Promotes sustainable recovery in the southwest by improving living conditions and fostering resilient livelihoods.

These initiatives are designed to build resilience and reduce dependency on emergency aid by empowering communities to better manage future crises.
