Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko issues urgent directives to combat flooding risks

The Government of Senegal is mobilizing all available resources to minimize the impact of potential flooding during the upcoming rainy season. During Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko issued strict instructions to relevant ministers, emphasizing the critical need for early risk assessment and proactive measures.

Government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye confirmed that several urgent actions must be implemented without delay. Key priorities include the strategic deployment of emergency response teams and the organization of an interministerial simulation exercise before June 15, 2026. This drill will evaluate the State’s preparedness and response capabilities in the event of natural disasters.

Key initiatives to strengthen flood resilience

The cabinet’s official statement highlights ongoing preparatory efforts, including:

  • Clearing drainage systems to ensure unimpeded water flow
  • Inspecting drainage structures for structural integrity and functionality
  • Deploying high-capacity water pumps in flood-prone areas
  • Developing emergency response plans for high-risk zones

Recognizing the cross-cutting nature of flood prevention, Prime Minister Sonko called for seamless inter-agency collaboration. The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation will lead coordination efforts, while the Ministry of the Interior will support civil protection and crisis management initiatives.

Unified approach to disaster preparedness

The Prime Minister stressed that effective flood prevention requires a coordinated national response. All government departments must align their strategies under the guidance of the Hydraulics and Sanitation Ministry, ensuring that emergency protocols are both comprehensive and actionable.
