Gabon’s Human Development Index (HDI) has experienced an alarming decline since 2021, reversing decades of steady progress. After peaking at 0.704 in 2020, the index fell to 0.693 in 2021, pushing the country out of the high human development category and into the medium development group. This reversal exposes the fragility of a growth model historically reliant on oil revenues, which proved too vulnerable to economic and health shocks.
