The presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, and Guinea-Bissau, General Horta N’Tam, are set to pay official visits to Libreville in the coming days to mark Gabon’s 66th Independence Day. According to a statement from the Gabonese presidency’s spokesperson, Théophane Nzame Nze Biyoghe, President Tshisekedi will arrive on August 15, while General Horta N’Tam will follow on August 18, a day after the main celebrations.
The two visits aim to strengthen bilateral ties and foster deeper cooperation between Gabon and these two West African nations. This diplomatic engagement comes at a pivotal moment for all three countries, particularly Gabon, where recent political developments have reshaped the national landscape.
Political transitions shaping regional diplomacy
In Gabon, the upcoming visits follow a period of institutional normalization following the August 2023 coup d’état that brought Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to power, ousting Ali Bongo Ondimba. This transition culminated in Oligui Nguema’s election as president in April 2025, signaling a return to constitutional order after a period of instability.
For the DRC, President Tshisekedi’s reelection in December 2023 for a second term comes amid ongoing security challenges in the eastern regions. The M23 rebel group continues to hold significant territory despite multiple regional and international mediation efforts, posing a persistent threat to stability.
Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, remains in a transitional phase following a military coup in November 2025. General Horta N’Tam, who served as army chief of staff at the time, was installed as interim president after the disputed presidential election and subsequent removal of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup, suspending the electoral process and prolonging the transition period amid ongoing negotiations between the junta and civilian authorities.
