Detention in Dakar amid rising tensions

In the capital of Senegal, a French national in his thirties has been taken into custody during a recent wave of arrests targeting individuals accused of violating the country’s morality laws. The engineer, who has been living in Dakar, faces multiple serious charges, including unnatural acts, conspiracy, money laundering, and intentional transmission of HIV.

Diplomatic response from France

The French Embassy in Dakar has confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation. Consular officials have already conducted four visits to the detainee, exercising the full scope of consular protection. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris is in direct contact with the detainee’s family and local authorities to ensure proper legal and humanitarian assistance.

Stricter penalties for LGBTQ+ individuals

Earlier this year, Senegal enacted revised legislation that imposes a maximum of ten years in prison for individuals convicted of engaging in same-sex relations. This legal shift reflects broader social and political pressures surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in the country. The French government has publicly reiterated its stance in favor of global decriminalization of homosexuality and the elimination of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
