Several months after the Africa Cup of Nations final where the national team of Sénégal defeated Maroc with a 1-0 scoreline, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a serious caution to all participating nations. This warning comes just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the États-Unis, Canada, and Mexique.
The CAN final was defined by a significant officiating controversy. Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndella awarded a penalty to Maroc while simultaneously disallowing a goal for Sénégal. In a heated protest, the Senegalese players, under the guidance of coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch for approximately ten minutes before eventually returning to finish the game.
The match ultimately concluded with a triumph for the Lions of Teranga, thanks to a decisive goal by Pape Guèye. This victory allowed Sénégal to secure their second ever continental title.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Gianni Infantino saw fit to reiterate the strict regulations regarding team behavior during matches. “Beginning with the World Cup, any team that decides to abandon the field to protest refereeing decisions will be issued red cards and will lose the match by forfeit!”
This firm statement serves as a clear directive to prevent any similar disruptions during the upcoming global tournament.
