An Ebola epidemic emerged in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on May 15. Since then, the Bundibugyo strain—a rare and highly lethal Ebola variant—has continued its relentless spread. The outbreak has now extended beyond Ituri into other eastern provinces, including North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo, with neighboring Uganda also reporting cases. Despite the deployment of international aid teams, including those from Medair and World Vision, the situation remains dire.
In a recent update issued on August 3, the United Nations highlighted the worsening crisis, citing World Health Organization data from August 1. By July 30, the epidemic had already claimed 1,587 lives out of 3,748 confirmed cases, translating to a staggering 44% fatality rate. Alarmingly, the past week alone saw 567 new infections and 296 deaths, marking the highest weekly toll since the outbreak began. Among those affected are 151 healthcare workers, with 44 of them succumbing to the virus.
As the crisis deepens, the United Nations has warned that “response capacities are being stretched to their limits”. In response, the International Medical Corps (IMC), in partnership with UN agencies, is scaling up its efforts to contain the virus and provide critical care to those in need.
