After a standout season in Belgium, 26-year-old goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen is set to make a high-profile switch to England’s Premier League. The move from Union Saint-Gilloise to newly promoted Ipswich Town is valued at a minimum of €10 million, with the potential for an additional €3 million in performance-based bonuses.
The transfer marks a significant step forward for the Dutch shot-stopper, who has overcome early challenges to establish himself as one of the league’s most reliable goalkeepers. Scherpen’s departure follows a dominant campaign where he helped Union Saint-Gilloise secure the Croky Cup and earned the prestigious Golden Glove award for most clean sheets in the Belgian league.
From bright prospect to Premier League-bound talent
Scherpen’s journey to the top flight hasn’t been linear. Signed by Brighton & Hove Albion from Ajax for €5 million in 2021, his initial stint in England saw limited first-team opportunities. Loan spells at KV Oostende, Vitesse Arnhem, and Sturm Graz followed, providing valuable experience before his permanent move to Belgium last summer.
Joining Union Saint-Gilloise for around €2 million in July 2025, Scherpen quickly became a cornerstone of the team’s defensive line. Over 43 appearances, he conceded just 22 goals—an impressive tally that included 21 clean sheets. His performances didn’t go unnoticed, with European clubs monitoring his progress closely.
Ipswich bolster squad with Dutch talent
The English club has also acquired midfielder Kayne van Oevelen from FC Volendam, adding depth to their squad. Scherpen and van Oevelen will now compete for playing time alongside established names like Christian Walton, who was Ipswich’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper last season.
